🌿 Lake Conroe Native Plant Program — Overview

The native plant program is part of a broader aquatic vegetation management strategy designed to:

• Restore and maintain native aquatic plants
• Control invasive species like hydrilla
• Improve water quality and shoreline stability
• Enhance fish and wildlife habitat

This program has been active for decades and continues today as part of the lake’s watershed protection efforts.
 

🛠️ How the Program Works

1. Collection & Propagation

• Native plants are collected from the lake (late summer / early spring)
• They are taken to an aquatic nursery at the Lake Conroe dam
• Staff propagate plants using cuttings or root stock in water-filled trough systems

👉 The nursery:

• Contains multiple lined growing troughs
• Allows plants to establish roots, go dormant in winter, and regrow in spring
